Katie had a hemorrhagic stroke and needed speech and physical therapy to begin her road to recovery. Though she has some hurdles ahead of her, she’s very fortunate to have a caring, loving sister – Mary – who helps take care of her, both physically and emotionally. When they hit a dead end with insurance coverage for Katie’s rehab, Mary turned to BELIEVE – Stroke Recovery Foundation (BSRF) for help.
With a grant from BSRF, Katie was able to continue therapy and is seeing improvements. She’s going to rehab twice a week and can now lift her hand and talk a little bit. Mary is grateful for the financial assistance they received through BSRF and says that if it hadn’t been for the grant, “we would not have seen this quicker improvement that we’re seeing now.”
Mary, whose husband also had a stroke, knows all too well the amount of care it takes to help a loved one get back to their life. She cared for her husband at home for three years until he died in 2020. Shortly after, Katie had her stroke. Mary has served as a health coach for Katie and has worked hard to get her the care she needs to progress. When she received the grant for Katie, she said, “It felt so wonderful to know that someone out there is advocating for her to get help and get back to normal.”
